A Guide to the Addams Family Part 1
I've taken an in depth look into this movie, so if you don't want to know every little detail, then now is the time to turn away! The Addams Family was originally started by Charles Addams who created a cartoon, that got so popular it then went onto to become a very successful TV show in 1964. Of course in 1991, filmmakers got hold of it, and we were landed with this beauty of a movie, starring Raul Julia, Angelica Houstan, Christina Ricci and Christopher Lloyd. I will go through the movie from the beginning chatting about what I believe is happening between characters, references to the original show and explaining more in depth about the characters.
Gomez Addams:
Gomez is a multi billionaire, he got most of his wealth from inheritance and investments, however he has little regard for money, often spending it on ridiculous things like $1000 just on cigars, which you see him smoke repeatedly through out the film. It's apparent that perhaps he put a lot of his wealth into the mansion that they live in. Gomez's runs businesses all around the world including, a swamp, this is scene through out the movie, or where we are led to believe is where he keeps his vault, only he knows how to get there. Gomez also owns a crocodile farm, a buzzard farm, a salt mine, a tombstone factory, this might explain why they have a graveyard next to their house, he clearly had the money to pay for all of his loved ones to be buried at home, he also owned a uranium mine. Gomez has a fictional net worth to believed at 2 billion.
Thing:
In the original TV show, you never really saw thing, it was believed to be a horrible creature that no one was allowed to see, apart from the only part of it that was human, the hand, which is why we see a hand moving around in a spider like sequence through out the movie. I really like how the filmmakers changed that and made it seem more like Thing was a character and not just a prop, and showed some personality, despite how odd that is, as it's a hand.
After we are introduced to Gomez and Thing, it becomes apparent that Gomez is missing his brother dearly, they have been trying to contact him for 25 years, what happened to him?
Morticia Addams:
We are introduced to Morticia Addams by Gomez waking her up and showing his undying love for her. It's thought that Morticia is a witch. She loves communicating to Gomez in French, especially when showing her love for him. At the beginning we see that she cuts a few buds off of some roses, again, nice homage to the original TV show, where she is seen doing the same thing. Also note in their bedroom, the plant the African strangler Cleopatra makes a nice appearance.
Wednesday Addams:
Wednesday getting her name from the poem "Wednesday's child is full of woe" which matches her personality pretty well don't you think? We understand at this point that Wednesday and Pugsley are obviously quite close, and enjoy spending time together. At this point they are seen travelling to school together as Lurch gives them their school lunches.
Pugsley Addams:
Pugsley is the eldest out of the two of them, as you may notice the character of Pugsley is a bit tubby, in the original TV series, Morticia mentions to Pugsley about only eating five pieces of cake, when attending a birthday party. Pugsley is thought to be something of a child genius too, always breaking into things and fixing things.
Hang on a second though, when we are first introduced to the movie, the clock says it's 9am, so the children are running awfully late for school? This may be due to the fact in the original TV series, Gomez wasn't particularly keen on the children attending school as Grandmama supposedly was their tutor and taught them everything.
Gomez is seen playing golf off his roof, he hits one of the balls, which hits his neighbor, who happens to be a Judge. Now supposedly Gomez has dabbled in law in the past, never loosing a case, is this why he knows the Judge, do they live in a gated community of wealth?
Morticia and Gomez are in their conservatory as it were, notice how Morticia is cutting the buds off of the roses? This is homage to the original TV show, where the her character does the same thing, whilst attending to her African strangler, which can also be seen in this scene, Cleopatra.
